Learn about the new Google Meet app (2025)

Google Duo and Google Meet have combined into a new Meet app for video calling and meetings. The Google Duo app and icon are now Google Meet Learn about the new Google Meet app (1). Learn how to download the new Meet app.

Available features and encryption methods in the Meet app are different between Meetings, Meet calls, and Meet Legacy Calls (previously known as Duo). Learn about call and meeting encryption in Meet.

When you communicate in Google Meet, you can use either:

  • Meetings: Create or join Google Meet meetings with a link. Meetings can be scheduled or instant and are cloud-encrypted.
  • Calls:
    • Legacy calls
      • Formerly known as Duo, lets users ring a personal account or phone number directly in an end-to-end encrypted manner.
    • Meet calls
      • Experience upgraded mobile calls that ring directly to a Google Workspace, personal account, or phone number with cloud encryption.
      • Optional end-to-end encryption is available for personal users. Learn about the transition from legacy calls to Meet.

Meet calling has already rolled out to Business and EDU users and is now rolling out to users with personal accounts over the next few months.

To use the new calling experience as soon as it's available to you, keep your Meet app up-to-date. When all parties in the call use the latest version of Meet with the update, an in-app prompt explains that they are now using the new calling experience. Otherwise, the call defaults to the legacy calling experience. Once all users have the updated Meet app, legacy calling is no longer accessible.

Tips:

  • Your Google Account name and pronouns are shown to other meeting members. Learn how to change your Google Account info.
  • Contacts you previously blocked in Meet can join Meet meetings and Group Calls. Learn more about who can join your meetings.

Learn about legacy calling features

With the upgrade of Duo to Meet, we added Duo legacy calling features to the Meet app. The upgrade is an improved app experience and doesn't require a new download for Duo users. You can still:

  • Make 1:1 or group calls to friends and family by phone number or email.
  • Use fun filters and effects.
  • Send messages.
  • Ask Google Assistant to call with your existing devices.
  • Turn on Meet moments.
  • Use Family mode.
  • Preview video calls with Knock Knock.

Tips:

  • Meet Legacy Calls previously known as Duo doesn’t include the latest meetings and Meet calls features.
  • For Business and EDU Users:
    • Your admin controls Legacy calling functionality through the Legacy Services Switch. Learn how to manage legacy calling features for your users.
    • EDU users under age 18 don't have access to calling functionality.
  • Account and phone number is required. Learn how to get started with legacy calling in Google Meet.
