II. ROGER FEIGELSON'S PICK OF THE WEEK, Etc.__________

PICK OF THE WEEK...

Silva Screen has just released one of the most important releases of the year.
Continuing in their series of impressive John Barry recordings, Silva folows up their
magnificent rendition of RAISE THE TITANIC with WALKABOUT. Years ago I
owned the POO lp bootleg of the score. While the score is a mere 27 minutes long,
the lp was still quite incomplete and repeated cues to fill in the vacuum. Nearly all
pressings were somewhat warped, given the score an unintended additional nuance,
which wasn't welcome. Ah bootlegs.

When Silva announced this recording, I was somewhat skeptical. Part of the character
of these earlier John Barry scores comes from the older recording
techniques...something that digital recordings can't replicate because they're too
perfect. Somehow, that isn't an issue here. Yes, it has impressive, perfect digital
sound, but somehow the engineering of this recording manages to capture the spirit of
the original. You can hear the detail in each instrument. Oh if only Varese could take
a lesson from the recording technique illustrated here, their recordings would really
come to life.

The score itself is of course John Barry through and through. A haunting choral piece
for children's choir featured in "The Children" is one of the highlights, giving a surreal
feel to what was a surreal film. I saw the film once at the Castro in San Francisco
when it was rereleased several years ago. I remember being struck by the poetic
beauty of this strange tale, never quite finishing an interpretation of what it all meant.
Barry's score is so perfect for the film, featuring wordless choir throughout. A
precursor to MOONRAKER.

Since the score is so short, Silva has filled out the album with some short suites of
other film scores. But in truth, after taking the musical journey that is WALKABOUT,
there's no need for me to proceed past track 9. And I'm not big on compilations
anyway.

I will say that this album really satisfies the need for any release of the original tracks.
Which is good. I had nearly secured the rights to release the original tracks, when it
turned out the masters were simply missing without a trace. Which is fine. This release
from Silva is as definitive as it can get.

ROGER'S BUYING PATTERNS FOR 2000:

Number of CDs bought for 2000 films: 4

HOWARD BLAKE
The Duellists / Riddle Of The Sands
AOD HB002 (Promo) 19.99
(73:52) Duellists is visually triumphant 1977 Ridley Scott movie with
dark, somber music (37:11). Napoleon-era backdrops get authentic flavor,
duels get intense, dissonant strings, romantic moods get haunting
lyricism. Riddle Of The Sands, a 1979 spy thriller set in foggy island
landscapes of northern Germany, gets rich, evocative score (36:41) with
strong main theme. Moody, exciting music played by National Philharmonic
Orchestra with chorus.

DON DAVIS
Turbulence 2: Fear Of Flying PTE 8526 15.99
(72:54) Good thing, bad thing. It's exciting music, but realized all on
synthesizers. Limited colors grow heavy at 73 minutes. If only they had
hired an orchestra...

ANTOINE DUHAMEL
Le Cinema D'Antoine Duhamel
Universal 159649 (France) 29.99
-Pierrot Le Fou (1 track)/Domicile Conjugal (3 tracks)/
Ridicule (3 tracks)/Weekend (1 track)/Belphegor (3 tracks)/etc-

PASCAL ESTEVE
La Veuve De Saint-Pierre Universal 542572 (France) 29.99
(46:27) New movie by Patrice Leconte has score for large orchestra.
Dramatic, sometimes sweeping, sometimes somber score. Mood over melody.

JERRY GOLDSMITH
Police Story / Medical Story PCR 507 (Belgium) 19.99
(53:49) -Limited Edition- 1973 TV movie featured superb, propulsive
score by Goldsmith (23 minutes). Subsequent episode library cues with
adaptations by Richard Shores also included. Also has suite from Medical
Story (7:11) scored by Arthur Morton with a Goldsmith main theme.

ERICH KORNGOLD
Complete Works For Violin & Piano CPO 999709 11.99
-Violin Sonata in G/Caprice Fantastique/Serenade/etc-
Capsule review coming soon.

MICHEL LEGRAND
Partir Revenir Editions23 80045 (France) 29.99
(76:18) Rachmaninoff's Concerto No. 2 for piano and orchestra takes up
first half. Second half is Legrand's score. Highlight is Legrand's own
concerto (20:06), featuring one of his finest melodies. The work is
exciting, haunting, powerful. A Legrand classic.

ENNIO MORRICONE
Gli Occhi Freddi Della Paura Dagored 119 (Italy) 16.99
Capsule review coming soon.

My Name Is Nobody CDST 330 (expanded) 20.99
(74:31) Terrific 1973 score, expanded for the first time. Serio-comic
western with Terence Hill & Henry Fonda gets several Morricone moods -
from colorful & whimsical through trademark Italian western style, from
rich & beautiful through pure "final showdown" cliche'. Strong score,
lengthy recording.

Slalom Dagored 118 (Italy) 16.99
(41:31) Rare upbeat, uptempo Morricone score represented fully for the
first time. Pretty cheesy stuff.

JEAN-CLAUDE PETIT
Les Miserables Madoro K 1042 (France) 29.99
(43:38) New version of classic tale starring John Malkovich & Gerard
Depardieu. Dramatic, exciting symphonic music. One of Petit's strongest
scores to date.

RYUICHI SAKAMOTO
Gohatto (aka Tabou) Milan 76688 (France) 29.99
(64:58) Samurai/thriller scored for strings, flute, oboe, clarinet,
bassoon, piano, sho and percussion. Herrmann-influenced in style,
phrasing. Numerous unusual atonal, percussive sections. Dark and eerie.

PHILIPPE SARDE
Princesses / Un Frere Universal 159648 (France) 29.99
(41:58) Music from three movies emphasizing jazz combined with string
orchestra. Crisp, dynamic recording swings from upbeat to moody.
Prinesses (17:10) / Un Frere (15:09) / L'Homme Aux Yeux D'Argent (9:39).

ROLF WILHELM
Und Ewig Singen Die Walder Cobra 005 (Germany) 17.99
Capsule review coming soon.

IV. LAST WEEK'S RELEASES______________________________

JOHN BARRY
Walkabout Silva 339 (UK - Cond Nic Raine) 15.99
(65:44) World premier of lyrical 1971 score (26:50) for classic Nicolas

Roeg allegory of two abandoned children in Australian outback. Barry's
music is reflective, incredibly sensitive work for orchestra and
chorus. Superbly recorded. Also has: Seance on a Wet Afternoon (6:03),

They Might Be Giants (4:51), The Chase (5:17), The Betsy (5:19), The
Corn Is Green (5:18) and Alice's Adventures (4:25).

RICHARD RODNEY BENNETT
Summer Music Koch 7505 (Cond Sedares) 16.99
(50:17) Five concert works. Flute unaccompanied: Sonatina &
Impromptu. Flute & piano: Summer Music & Winter Music. Flute plus New
Zealand Chamber Orchestra: Momento (18 minutes). Earliest work dates
from 1954, the latest from 1983. Momento is the highlight, blending
accessible harmonies in strings with limber melodies for flute.

ELMER BERNSTEIN
Concerto For Guitar Angel 56859 15.99
(47:56) Wow! Dynamic, exciting new concert work (21:58) in three
movements showcases guitar with London Symphony Orchestra under Elmer's
baton. Rich melodies, virtuoso playing. Trademark Bernstein-isms
abound. Also has: Albeniz's La Vega & Jack Marshall's Essay for Guitar.

CARTER BURWELL
Book Of Shadows: Blair Witch 2 Milan 35926 16.99
(40:40) Performed by Carter Burwell, gman and Splattercell. Not so
much music as sound design. Percussive bumps, thumps, clicks.
Occasionally an acoustic sound is struck, plucked or stroked. Burwell
shows how far current movie music can go. Maybe it works perfectly with

the visuals but...

RENE CLEMENIC
Moliere HMA 1951020 9.99
(51:01) Period movie features Clemencic Consort. Score has elegant,
authentic-sounding period flavor with original melodies and adaptations
of existing ones.

ALEXANDRE DESPLAT
The Luzhin Defence Silva 345 (UK) 15.99
(56:06) Desplat conducts London Symphony in rich score centered around
gentle melody for strings and piano (right hand). Drama about
chessplayers during the 1920's receives haunting, melancholy music.
Sometimes sad, sometimes nostalgic. Add some tense, dramatic moments,
an exquisite waltz - get a terrific album.

MARK ISHAM
Men Of Honor Motown 159869 16.99
(39:41) Navy drama with Robert De Niro & Cuba Gooding, Jr. has solemn,
sometimes exciting, sometimes stirring orchestral score. 30 minutes of
score plus 3 vocals.

RANDY NEWMAN
Meet The Parents Dreamworks 50286 16.99
(39:31) Robert De Niro, Ben Stiller and Siamese cat receive large
orchestral score with chorus. Energetic, sometimes comic, sometimes
straight-faced symphonic music in typical Randy Newman fashion. 25
minutes of score plus 6 vocals.

ZBIGNIEW PREISNER
Dekalog Silva 6029 (UK) 15.99
Re-issue of album on the POM label from Poland of German TV program
directed by Krysztof Kieslowski.
